Quick – what's the most effective way for you to save energy?
If you're like many Americans, you'd say turn out the lights or turn up the AC's thermostat. And, like many Americans, you'd miss the mark.
Turns out, when figuring what we can do to go green, most of us overstate. We think about curtailment – unplugging appliances, driving less, turning off lights – when improving the efficiency of our cars, appliances and home would take the biggest chunk out of our energy footprint.
What you can do? Let's face it: nobody's going to go out and replace a working hot-water heater or washing machine. And few of us have a few grand lying around to replace our drafty old windows. But there are some easy steps you can take that can effectively cut energy…

We’re “breaking ground” with the construction of a “green,”
single-family residence — one which will earn the coveted certification of
LEED Platinum, Net Zero. Located on the inland side of the Village of Corona
Del Mar, the house will be energy-efficient, equipped with solar panels
producing more electricity than you use. With completion slated for mid-2014,
this house offers four bedrooms, four bathrooms, an office, and a
state-of-the-art remote control lighting system. This luxurious, green lifestyle
home will set a new standard of living in The Village.

Buy In Bulk
When buying items that you use daily or in large quantities, consider buying in bulk. You will save money and packaging. Consider splitting bulk purchases with neighbors or friends to get that savings but not the full quantity of the purchase.
Find Recycled Items
Look for products that contain or are packaged with post-consumer recycled materials whenever possible.
Use CFL Light Bulbs
When your incandescent light bulbs stop working, replace them with the new, energy efficient compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs). According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) CFLs use two-thirds less energy than traditional incandescent light bulbs and last 10 times longer.
Get Reusable Bags
