Volunteer in Huntington Beach this Saturday

In honor of National Public Lands Day, volunteers across the country will be pitching in to tidy up their local parks Saturday, September 25th.

Mother Nature Network reports that last year, 150,000 people were on hand to help out, collectively removing an estimated 900,000 pounds of trash, planting approximately 100,000 trees, shrubs and native plants and building/maintaining nearly 1,320 miles of trails, according to the National Public Lands Day website.

Tomorrow, Orange County residents can join the environmental effort by volunteering at the Shipley Nature Center in Huntington Beach. Participants will be helping to clear brush, mulch trails, plant native grass plugs and construct protective fencing.

LEED Ushers in a Green Real Estate Revolution

Green building practices and policies have become increasingly significant in the real estate market as the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED certification program continues to influence a worldwide shift towards eco-friendly construction.

NPR reports that, despite being a historically slow-changing industry, green building currently makes up nearly one-third of new construction in the U.S.—up from 2 percent in 2005.
